Did You Just Move In? Here’s How You Maintain the House

So you have just moved into your dream house. No doubt you did a lot of research to find the perfect house and a lot of negotiations to close a favorable deal. Now you own a house that seems just perfect for your family but don’t forget about the new house maintenance that needs to be done.

Once you have moved in and all of your furniture and belongings are already in place, what more is left to be done?

To help you with that, here are some maintenance tasks that require your immediate attention.

    Let’s have a look.

New House Maintenance – Change the locks

Once you are done with the closing and you hold the keys to your brand new house, don’t forget to either install or buy new locks, especially for the exterior or main doors. Call up a locksmith and replace the old locks. This is important because the previous owners including your real estate agent and maintenance folks are likely to have your house keys. So, for security purposes and for your peace of mind, it is imperative to change the existing locks without delay.

New House Maintenance – Clean Up the House

So many people don’t pay adequate attention to cleaning and leave the house unclean. That is why you must not neglect cleaning the house assuming that the previous owners must’ve done it already. Even if they did clean the house, clean everything for yourself. Either you can do it on your own or you may hire professional house cleaners.

A typical house cleaning will involve many activities like surface cleaning, vacuum, washing down cabinets, and counter fixtures. Once you complete cleaning the house on your own, you will feel good about the house especially if you have kids in your home.

New House Maintenance – Look For Plumbing Leaks

Even though the home inspector usually performs this before closing, you can always double-check the plumbing fixtures.  Often times it is hard to detect a plumbing issue just by looking at it unless you either thoroughly check it or use it. Most homeowners find numerous plumbing leaks once they start living in the house or when they thoroughly check the area after moving in.

So always keep an eye for running toilets or dripping faucets. You should also double check the water heater for any sign of a leak. The easiest way to detect a water leak is to take a water meter reading and then without using water, take a reading after two hours. If there is a change in the reading, you need to locate the water leak.

    Steam Clean All Carpets

This is a step that must be taken before moving in the furniture. For proper steam carpet cleaning, you must hire the professional carpet cleaning service. It is better to take the services of professional cleaners than doing the work all by yourself. Most people attempt the task by borrowing a steam cleaner from family or friend but you shouldn’t get into the hassle unless you are experienced.
